The most influential business books

I’ve always read books and being in business means that I have a reason (as if I need one) to read books about business. I thought it might be worthwhile to create a list of my top business books; the ones that influenced me most.

  • Good to Great – Jim Collins. I’d never heard of Jim Collins until a few years ago. I attended a leadership conference where I watched a series of speakers from all over the world talk about leadership and one of these was Jim Colins. His book good to great is one of the seminal works that has shaped my subsequent business and personal activities. In the book he recounts the process of looking at hundreds of good and great companies all over the world and trying to identify what it was that enabled a company to make the transition from simply being good to being a great company. It sounds dry and academic but the insights that he, and his research team, draws out of the evidence,  have to place this book in my top list.
  • Jeff Olsen – The Slight Edge. In this small book Jeff Olsen talks about the choices we make everyday without even thinking about them that over time lead to either success or failure.
  • Robert Kiyosaki’s book – Rich Dad Poor Dad in which he tells his own story about how he watched his real father get the best education in the world but end up poor as a teacher and his friend’s dad who helped Robert embark on an educational path that provided financial literacy and the knowledge to enable him to amass great wealth. Internet Explorer 8 Released 5pm GMT

Microsoft has announced that the latest version of its web browser, Internet Explorer 8, will be available to download at noon EDT (which is 5pm GMT) today.

The main improvements being flagged up by Microsoft concern speed, ease of use and security. The latter improvement was prompted by a study indicating heightened concerns about online security in US consumers as a result of the current economic climate.

“Customers have made clear what they want in a Web browser – safety, speed and greater ease of use,” said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. “With Internet Explorer 8, we are delivering a browser that gets people to the information they need, fast, and provides protection that no other browser can match.”

Here are some of the key new features, according to Microsoft:

Security - Blocks two to four times more malware attacks than other browsers.

Accelerators – Accelerators make it faster and easier to perform common tasks online by making Web-based services such as ESPN.com, Live Search and Sina available for use directly from the page people are viewing. Users can simply right-click a word or phrase and instantly map, e-mail, or share it.

Web Slices – Web Slices in Internet Explorer 8 makes favorite information from sites such as Digg, Yahoo! Mail, OneRiot, and eBay instantly available wherever someone goes on the Web.

Visual search suggestions – The Instant Search Box in Internet Explorer 8 enables rich, real-time search from sites such as The New York Times, Amazon.com and Wikipedia, as well as sites from people’s own Favorites and History, complete with visuals and detailed information that saves time.

Microsoft will be showing IE8 off at its MIX09 web developer conference today.
